KAREL DOING Karel Doing (Canberra, Australia, 1965) vit et travaille à Rotterdam. Il est cinéaste au sens le plus large du terme. Son travail s'étend du film expérimental au documentaire, de la projection- performances au multimedia. Poésie visuelle et histoires personnelles sont ses principaux leitmotivs. Son travail est présenté dans de nombreux festivals, expositions et cinémas à travers le monde. Karel Doing est avant tout un cinéaste, mais il aime aussi travailler au-delà du simple écran. Il a déjà réalisé plus d'une quinzaine de courts et moyens-métrages, expérimentant tant au niveau du propos, du traitement que des genres. MAAS OBSERVATION (co-réalisé avec Greg Pope) et IMAGES OF A MOVING CITY peuvent être envisagés comme un prolongement du film muet, documentaires silencieux, observation de la vie quotidienne. ENERGY ENERGY est un film constitué de found-footage tiré de films pédagogiques -entre autres- d'une grande compagnie pétrolière avec une bande son de Pierre Bastien. WHIRLWIND est un ballet visuel de couleurs et de textures, assemblage d'images tournées à l'occasion de performances avec le groupe londonien Loophole Cinema. MENI est un film court, 20 secondes répétées dans une chorégraphie cinématographique. RAINBOW STORIES est une compilation de film produits par Karel Doing et réalisés par 11 artistes différents européens, une démonstration d'expérimentalistes contemporains. Après ces films, Karel Doing et Pierre Bastien ont travaillé ensembles pour deux performances; ROTARY FACTORY et RECOLLECTION. La première est un univers hypnotique de sons et images en boucles, la seconde est un assemblage de matériaux d'archives; fond-footage et sons volés. Karel Doing et Pierre Bastien ont également collaboré pour le cd-rom NEUF JOUETS OPTIQUES; neuf propositions sonores et visuelles destinées à être composées par l'utilisateur, une installation d'images et de sons à transformer à son gré. His work streches from experimental film to documentaries, projection performances and multi-media applications. Visual poetry and personal stories are his main interests. ENERGY ENERGY is a found-footage film compiled from instructional films by -among others- a big oil company, with a light hearted industrial soundtrack by Pierre Bastien. WHIRLWIND is a purely visual ballet of colours and textures based on film footage shot during performances with the London based group Loophole Cinema. MENI is a short dance film, only 20 seconds of dance is repeated in a filmic choreography.
